New Haverhill care home welcomes first residents

Cleves Place, the new care home on Millfields Way in Haverhill, opened its doors on 17th March and welcomed its first residents from Place Court care home in the town. Cleves Place, which began construction in November 2013, provides residential, nursing and dementia care for up to 60 residents, as well as day care in the adjacent Cleves Club. The new Club will open in May 2015 for older people living in their own homes locally.

Care UK, with home manager Sharlene Van Tonder and her team, have planned a very careful move-in process for 29 residents who are moving from Place Court in the town into the new home. The residents are being moved in stages, with groups of three or four at a time so everything can be carefully managed.

Sharlene Van Tonder said: “I have spent the last eight months really getting to know the residents and their relatives, so that my colleagues and I can ensure each resident’s move goes smoothly and that all their needs, as well as their family’s needs, are properly met. We are all looking forward to settling in and enjoying the new home together.”

Once all residents have moved into Cleves Place, the local community will be invited to take a look around the new home and meet the team.

Councillor Alan Murray, cabinet member for health and adult care, Suffolk County Council, said: “The opening of Cleves Place is yet another stepping stone in realising the vision we had for the future of long term care in Suffolk.

“With the number of older people and those living with dementia in Suffolk set to double by 2030, it is essential that we have an appropriate provision in place that can support these ones to maintain physical fitness, make new friends and ensure their independence for longer.

“Cleves Place boasts great facilities and I am delighted, as were the residents, to be involved in the grand opening. I am sure residents will be very pleased with their new home.”

Cleves Place is the sixth of ten new care homes to open across Suffolk, as part of Care UK’s development project in partnership with Suffolk County Council to meet the county’s demand for residential care. The home was named Cleves Place following a community competition in October 2013 where a Place Court resident chose it based on Haverhill’s history with Anne of Cleves.
