Enfield care home celebrates opening of new residential dementia unit

Care UK’s Elizabeth Lodge care home in Enfield has officially opened the doors of its new residential dementia unit to new residents. Deputy Mayor of Enfield, Councillor Patricia Ekechi, cut the ribbon of the 17-bed unit on 27 February.

The new unit has been adapted from two of the home’s five nursing units and has been fully refurbished to cater to the specialist needs of people who are living with dementia.

Each bedroom is decorated differently, residents will be able to choose which room they prefer and will then have their room tailored to their exact needs and wishes. Furniture is vintage-inspired and each room has an ensuite toilet and washbasin. The unit has separate fully adapted bathrooms and shower rooms.

The home’s activity coordinators will focus on providing dementia-friendly activities with the residents in the new unit, including providing one-to-one activities in residents’ rooms for those who are bed-bound.

After her tour of the new unit, Councillor Ekechi commended the home manager, Manford Ncube, and his team on the impressive care they provide, on creating a welcoming atmosphere in the home and on forging a good working relationship between the home and Enfield Council.

The opening of the new unit provided a good opportunity for residents’ families and visitors to give their feedback about the home. Comments from the survey that was run on the day include: “friendly, caring and highly skilled staff”, “pleasant atmosphere”, “very friendly staff who are very proud of their unit”, and “very impressed with the rooms and care demonstrated by the staff.” Almost everyone who answered the survey said they strongly agreed that the quality of care provided at Elizabeth Lodge is excellent.

“Here at Elizabeth Lodge we’re really excited about the new residential dementia unit,” says Manford Ncube, the care home manager. “Until now we were only able to deliver nursing care, but with the new unit we’re able to provide a full range of care services to older people in the local area. Because residents will now be able to stay with us as their needs change, we can provide them and their families with the invaluable sense of security and stability that’s so vital when a person is living with dementia.”

Elizabeth Lodge is at 69 Pennington Drive, Winchmore Hill, Enfield, Greater London N21 1TG. To find out more about what the home has to offer, call 020 8360 2266 or visit www.careuk.com/care-homes/elizabeth-lodge-enfield
