Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre celebrates its fifth anniversary

Patients and staff will be celebrating as Care UK’s Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre celebrates its fifth anniversary on Monday 10th November.

More than 50,000 people have had procedures done at the centre since it opened on 9th November 2009. More than 2,400 hip replacements along with 2,500 knee replacements have been carried out in its four state-of-the-art theatres while people in the Bristol area can now see more thanks to the removal of 7,000 cataracts with extremely short waiting times and excellent clinical outcomes. Any member of the public eligible for NHS Treatment, may choose to have their elective procedure or surgery at Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre.

More than 2,000 hernias have been repaired and around 1,400 people can work more comfortably after operations to reverse carpal tunnel syndrome. Walking has also become a lot more comfortable for local people as surgeons at the centre operated on over 500 bunions.

Hospital director Pamela Mackie said: “I could not be prouder of my team. They have made a significant contribution to health in the region and to reducing  waiting lists. They have also won national awards for innovations in healthcare and surgery and have presented the findings of their research at international conferences in Europe and America.

“Our patient satisfaction levels are also consistently high - above the national average - and I think that deserves a slice of birthday cake.”

The centre’s first patient Mr Colin Best agrees. He said: “I had my hip replaced at the centre and I could not fault the kindness and professionalism of the team. I could barely move when I had the operation procedure but, thanks to an excellent surgical team and wonderful follow-up physiotherapy, I was soon walking five miles a day. I’ve kept that up and I recently re-developed my garden – I pulled up concrete paths and laid a new lawn, all without a twinge.”

Mr Best’s wife Jennifer was so impressed she has elected to have several procedures done at the centre, which is open exclusively to NHS patients. She said: “I was so impressed at the way Colin was cared for and with the cleanliness of the centre I have had two bunion procedures carried out and my cataracts removed.

“I used the centre’s one-stop cataract service. I have glaucoma and thought it might complicate issues but from the time I left home to the time I arrived back was just two hours. Everyone was kind and re-assuring and the operations were very successful - I am going back soon to get the other cataract removed.”

Ward manager Olwyn Dawkins was on duty on the first day: “I am delighted when I hear stories like those of Mr and Mrs Best. The team strive to be kind, caring and professional and I’m pleased that we have that reputation locally.

“We are also scrupulous about hygiene: we have never had a hospital acquired case of MRSA or c.difficile, and patients have told me how important that is to them.”

“We are very proud of all the teams working in the hospital both clinical, administrative and hotel services. We realise even ensuring the patients have a well balanced choice of food, which is prepared and cooked on site, has a great impact on their recovery and many patients told us the centre is more like a five star hotel!”
