Billingham home wins praise from relatives and approval of national care inspectors

Care UK’s Hadrian Park care home, in Billingham, has been given the seal of approval by a national care watchdog, with inspectors, residents and relatives highlighting the home’s high standards of dignity and care.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) report, which follows an unannounced inspection of the home in Marsh House Avenue, quotes a resident’s relative who told them: “It is like a five star hotel here. You could not get a better set of staff anywhere else." Another is quoted in the report saying: “I can sleep at night knowing that my mum is safe and happy. It takes a lot of concern away. I think the staff are tremendous."

The inspectors examine the home, its records and interview team members, residents and relatives to ensure that the home meets the Government’s five standards of quality and safety which are:

  • Care and welfare of people who use services
  • Cooperating with other providers
  • Safeguarding people who use services from abuse
  • Management of medicines
  • Assessing and monitoring the quality of service provision

Inspectors spoke to 20 residents and 10 relatives during the recent inspection, many of who are quoted throughout the report praising the team members and saying they are happy and content. One resident said: "You could not pay me to leave here. I am happy and content, the girls are lovely and he (pointing to the handyman) has a heart of gold. He will do anything for us. I think we are lucky to be in here."

Inspectors watched the catering staff team delivering meals to a resident's room and noted that time had been taken to ensure that the person had been happy with the portion size and temperature of their food. They also noted that the staff used their knowledge of each resident, as well as appropriate humour, to encourage people into activity and to maintain personal care.

Manager Denise Findley said: “I was delighted to read the report, as I think the inspectors have really picked up on the team’s dedication. They highlighted the quality of activities, the work with people with dementia and the person-centred nature of the care we provide, something the team strives for constantly.

“I was also pleased to see that the inspectors had noted the way we encourage people to be a part of their own care, both within the home and with outside medical teams. Choice is the hallmark of dignity and we aim to provide our residents with real choice in all aspects of their daily life.”
