On Wednesday 6th November the 4th National Dementia Care Awards took place at the Colwick Hall Hotel, Nottingham. Care UK was fortunate enough to be nominated for three categories, one of which was the ‘Best Resident/Relative Contribution’. The nominee was Len Clark, a relative of one of the residents who live at Broadwater Lodge in Surrey.
Len was nominated by home manager Angela Bookham because she thought Len was such a worthy winner. Here is a snippet of why Angela thought Len deserved this award:
“Len is the devoted husband of Isobel, a resident at Broadwater Lodge who is living with dementia and, although he’s in his mid-90s, every day Len travels on his scooter to visit Isobel.
“Len is so proud of how we care for his wife he invited the Right Hon Jeremy Hunt to see for himself ‘what good care really looks like’.
“Mr Hunt was delighted to accept Len’s invitation and we organised a dignity day to showcase our activity based care and dementia care. Other VIPs including the local mayor also attended the event.”
Unfortunately Len did not win the award, but he continues to visit Isobel every day and is an inspiration to the team at Broadwater Lodge.
