Students at Ormiston Denes Academy in Lowestoft have been busy baking cakes and sharing afternoon tea and chat with Blyford wellbeing centre customers, as part of a new student-led community project.
The Ormiston Denes Bakery project kicked-off on Wednesday 18th with students baking a range of delicious cakes and biscuits before taking them along to share during afternoon tea and a friendly chat with customers at Blyford wellbeing centre. Students and Blyford wellbeing centre customers hope to gain many benefits from the project, and aim to bridge the generation gap between the young and older members of the community.
Amanda Smith, Care UK manager at Blyford wellbeing centre, said: “The bakery project is a wonderful idea as it brings older people and young people together in an informal and friendly environment. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the cakes and conversation on Wednesday, and we look forward to the students’ next visit”.
Peter Marshall, Principal at Ormiston Denes Academy, said: “Our students are very enthusiastic towards the bakery project as it is such a great opportunity, particularly for GCSE Health and Social Care students as they will gain valuable real-life experiences of working in the care sector”.
The Ormiston Denes Bakery is a project that has been developed and led by students, after the Student Leadership Team successfully secured funding for the project from the Ormiston Academies Trust; a not for profit sponsor of primary and secondary academies.
Blyford wellbeing centre, a day club for older members of the community, is located within close proximity of the high school and the students have previously worked with the wellbeing centre and Blyford residential care home. The students thoroughly enjoyed their first trial bake and share session and aim to continue the project on a twice weekly basis.
