Free dementia advice for Godalming carers

At Broadwater Lodge, we are running a free event for people caring for loved ones with dementia where experts will give advice on the condition which affects one in six people over the age of 80 nationwide.

The free session is on Thursday 26th September, between 2.30pm and 4pm and anybody interested in attending will be welcome.

The session will be led by local GP Dr Karen Jones and representatives from the Alzheimer’s Society and Care UK. Together, they will offer information about dementia as well as practical advice on improving a loved one’s wellbeing.

Home manager Angie Bookham said: “Quite often people caring for a loved one are working and, as well as the stress of caring and supporting their own family, they have the emotional challenge of seeing their parent’s behaviour change. This can be upsetting and highly stressful.

“We hope that by offering practical advice, support and a friendly ear, we can show people that there is a way forward and that they are not alone.”

Dignity and choice are central to Care UK’s philosophy of care and Dr Jones will also be talking to visitors and residents’ relatives about helping residents to remain in their home and avoid unnecessary hospital stays.

Angie said: “Some hospital stays for treatment will always be necessary but Broadwater Lodge is our residents’ home and some prefer to stay here whenever possible. We have an excellent care staff team and we work very closely with Dr Jones and the team at the Binscombe and The Mill surgeries to give residents and their families the greatest choice over their care.”

Visitors will also have a chance to pick up a free copy of the Care UK book ‘As Easy As ABC’ – a guide to fun activities which increase the wellbeing of people with dementia. For those who cannot attend the seminar the book can be downloaded at www.careuk.com.

The event is free and refreshments will be provided. Anyone interested in joining the event can contact Angie on: 01483 414186 or by emailing angie.bookham@careuk.com.
