Chester care home celebrates grandparents and salutes heroes

Residents at Care UK’s Pinetum home will be holding a double celebration, as they raise funds for the charity Help for Heroes and enjoy a party with their families to mark Grandparents Day.

On Thursday 11^th October, the Heroes and Heroines tea party will incorporate a celebration of National Grandparents Day, which falls on Sunday 7^th October, and National Heroes Day, on Sunday 21^st October.

Residents and their families will be joined in the celebrations by members of the 1st Battalion the Royal Welsh (1 R WELSH) which is based at The Dale Barracks in Chester. The light role infantry battalion, is often deployed on operations all over the world. Some of the home’s team members will also be dressed up in vintage uniform.

Adele Elliott, Pinetum’s Activities Coordinator, said: “We wanted to create a special occasion for residents and their relatives to celebrate Grandparents Day but, because so many people at Pinetum have served, or had loved ones in the armed forces, we wanted to show our support with a fundraising event for Help for Heroes.”

As well as selling Help for Heroes items and wristbands, cakes, made by the Care UK team and relatives, will be on sale and entertainment will be provided by local singer Sandra Currie.

One resident, Alan Gillett, served as a wartime pilot and went on to help found the charity Holidays for Heroes in Jersey. He said: “Some years ago, the co-founder and I were watching a newsreel about wounded service men from Afghanistan and we were quite amazed at the frugal support. She immediately started to envisage greater help and hence Holidays For Heroes was born.

“The charity has gone from strength to strength and now enables seriously wounded service men to visit Jersey with their families/helpers for a week at no cost.

“The work of such charities such as Help for Heroes and Holidays for Heroes is very important in giving greater opportunities and support. Speaking for our charity, some have never had a holiday and have never been to Jersey and the effect is magical.”
