Pinetum Care Home Shortlisted For National Award

Home news

Pinetum care home has been nominated for a national award for its use of artistic activities in a care setting.

Care UK’s Pinetum care home, situated in the grounds of the Countess of Chester Hospital, has been shortlisted for the Best “Year of the Arts” Care Setting Award by the National Activity Providers Association (NAPA), after demonstrating excellence in the use of music, poetry, painting, flower arranging and 3D art projects, for the benefit of residents.

Pinetum’s shortlisting recognises the quality and innovative nature of arts activities taking place at the home.

The home successfully demonstrated its breadth of beneficial arts-themed activities as part of its award submission, noting specifically the positive impact the inclusive creative activities have on residents’ lives and experiences.

One such example, is when residents, team members, relatives and visitors worked collaboratively to create a tactile and colourful canvas to display at the home, whereby every thread had been woven by, and represented, a person living, working and visiting Pinetum. The artwork demonstrated how lives weave together in colour and how lives come together in diversity.

In addition, to enhance its arts offering to residents, drama students from Chester University visit the home regularly to sing and host music quizzes to boost wellbeing. The home also hosts monthly ‘Era Days’, where residents are invited to discover historical eras through the medium of poetry, as well as partnering with local schools to collaboratively write poems.

Integral to residents’ lives at Pinetum is the use of flowers, through song and poem, sensory garden experiences and in creating pieces of art work. Residents are encouraged to select and arrange their own fresh flower blooms and choose where to place them. Similarly, residents are encouraged to exercise their creativity in painting ceramics, using stencils and tools to create patterns and creating 3D art using papier-mâché.

Home manager Emma Tillyer comments: “We are very proud here at Pinetum to be shortlisted for a national award for the home’s arts activities. It’s an acknowledgement of the whole team’s work. Every day the team here strives to enable residents to have happy and fulfilled lives, and one of the ways this is realised is through a range of stimulating, exciting, creative and enjoyable arts-themed activities. We eagerly await the results of the shortlisting later this year.”

Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, Pinetum is a purpose-built care home, which provides nursing, respite and day care for older people, including those who are living with the early stages of dementia. Pinetum also provides specialist care for adults with complex care needs, such as brain and spinal injury.
