Nerston care home in the pink to raise money for cancer charity

Residents, relatives and staff at Care UK's Cathkin House care home in East Kilbride had a day of fun and activities and raised more than £335 for the Breast Cancer Campaign appeal.

The care team and residents wore pink and made and sold pink cakes as part of their fundraising efforts.

Administrator Teresa Duffy and Activity Organiser Maureen Anderson, both of whom organised the day at the home in Glasgow Road, said: “Everyone had such a great time. Our chef made a huge pink cake in the shape of the breast cancer ribbon and other people made pink fairy cakes that people bought to raise funds.

“We gave people manicures, including some with foil wraps showing the pink ribbon logo that looked very smart.

“Many of our residents have supported cancer charities for many years. When you move into a home, there is no need to give up your hobbies and interests, so we wanted to support, and join in with, their fundraising activities and we raised £338 in total.”

Teresa and Maureen are now hoping that their application to Care UK’s ‘Working in the Community’ scheme will be successful. This scheme matches pound for pound any fundraising for local charities that Care UK employees undertake. If accepted, this could take the total raised at Cathkin House for the Breast Cancer Campaign to over £700.

Cathkin House provides care for older people in a warm and friendly purpose-built home which is close to the local shops and amenities.  Care UK operates 85 residential care homes and has a reputation for excellence, winning several prestigious national awards in 2011 for ground-breaking dementia care, the promotion of residents’ dignity and for health and social care investment.
