Fish, chips and ginger beer were on the menu as Silversprings resident, Gwen Simmonds celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends.
Gwen has been at Silversprings residential care home in Thorrington for just over a year, and her neice, Lyn McConnell explained, that good food was very much top of Gwen’s list when choosing the right care home for her.
Gwen, who was born in Ongar, Essex, grew up on a farm in Widdington, near Saffron Walden before becoming a primary school teacher. Always active, her childhood was spent practising gymnastics and after retirement she moved to Frinton, with her late husband Jack, where they would go swimming in the sea, almost every day, even in the winter months.
Gwen’s lunch was served in the home’s private dining room, which guests can use to dine with family and friends and for special occasions. Events Manager, Tina Dilley was on hand to help Gwen host her birthday lunch. “We love the opportunity to celebrate such an important birthday with our residents, it means a lot to us and to them. Gwen has received a card from the Queen, and with brother Eric, nieces and family around her it has been a lovely occasion for us all.”
