Soldiers old and new raise funds for Help for Heroes at Slough care home

Care UK’s Chief Executive Mike Parish will join the Mayor to plant a tree in the grounds of the home in Wexham Road to commemorate and celebrate those connected with the home who have served their country. They will also unveil a Help for Heroes plaque and a memorial wall which will feature the photographs and stories of residents, staff and relatives who have served, or who are currently serving, in the forces.

On the wall are framed photos of 100-year-old resident Thomas Humphries and of Reg Day, who sadly passed away in May, two weeks after celebrating his 100th birthday. Both men served in the armed forces and the frames also hold biographies of their achievements.

Relatives of 15 other residents have provided photographs and memories for the wall. Staff members have also contributed pictures of their brothers, neighbours and children who are currently serving.

Members of the armed forces connected to Care UK’s Oak House who are currently serving include the home’s activity care lead Deidre Timney’s daughter  Shelley, who is a Lance Corporal in the Royal Logistic Corps currently serving with 13 Air Assault, and Shelley’s  husband, Corporal David Bunn. Deputy manager Kim Tillson’s brother Lance Corporal Wayne Coombes is serving in the Parachute Regiment

Violet Kotu, service improvement manager, said: “Everyone at Oak House is looking forward to the day. The memory wall has stimulated lots of conversations and memories amongst our residents and staff. They are also looking forward to sharing  their stories as we raise funds for an excellent cause.”

The event on Friday will be open to the public and staff will be providing refreshments and entertainment to raise money for Help for Heroes, the charity which provides support to injured service men and women.

Members of the public are welcome to join the residents, guests, and soldiers old and new at Oak House, Forest Close, Wexham Road, Slough from 11am- 2pm on Friday 24th June.
