Residents tackle dance lessons with rugby stars

Whitefarm Lodge residents, have taken up dancing lessons with help from an unlikely group of teachers.

Rather than the stars of the ballroom, residents were joined by stars from Harlequins Rugby League club’s first team.

Luke Ambler, Jamie O'Callaghan, Lamont Bryan and Andy Ellis joined the Harlequins Rugby League Foundation’s dance officer Amy Howard for the weekly dance class she teaches at the home in Whitton.

The Foundation received funding from the Greater London Authority, through a project called 'PlaySport', to deliver a number of over-50s dance sessions within the Richmond borough.

Amy said: “The residents have been taught a number of seated chair-dance exercises over 10 weeks and they have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions. So much so, in fact, that they have asked to carry on.”

Home administrator Carol Bursill said: “Residents have had a great deal of fun bopping along to the music and staff say the sessions have brought a new level of energy to the groups. This is great as physical benefits bring mental benefits – we all know how we feel more alert after a bit of exercise and dancing is no different.

“The residents loved having the rugby players joining in for a session. As well as having a good laugh with them, I think some were looking to give the youngsters a good run for their money!”
