Southampton NHS Treatment Centre celebrated their 2nd Birthday on Thursday 21st October, with an all day event for patients, staff and representatives from partner organisations.
The Treatment Centre was set up as part of a government initiative to provide additional hospital beds to efficiently and effectively meet the challenge of increasing access to healthcare in the UK in order to cut waiting lists. In the two years the Centre has been open over 40,000 patients have visited the centre for a wide range of procedures including hip and knee replacements, gynaecology, cataract surgery and endoscopic investigations.
The celebration on 21st October saw a group of local school children visit the centre to take part in activities to learn about what happens in a hospital environment. In addition, representatives from local partners involved in care for older people including Age Concern and The Asian Elders attended a tour and falls awareness seminar hosted by the Treatment Centre’s physiotherapy team and a group of former patients returned to the centre to launch the new patient forum. There were also a number of staff-focused events running throughout the day.
At 2pm staff, former patients and members of partner organisations including NHS Southampton City and Southampton City Council gathered in the centre’s main reception to mark the occasion, with a cake cutting and speech from the Treatment Centre’s General Manager, Paula Friend.
Paula said: "The Birthday event was a way of saying thank you to the people who have helped make the Treatment Centre a success in the past two years, most notably our staff, who continue to provide fantastic levels of care to our patients. It was a really enjoyable day for everyone involved and a great way of marking this milestone."
