The Cumberland has received the Care UK regional award for “best personalised care plan” for its work with a resident with dementia.
Care UK, the largest provider health and social care across England and Wales gives the award to those providing the best examples of personalised care which helps residents to live their lives, as far as possible, as they wish to.
Our team won the award for their work with a 68 year-old man with dementia and behavioural issues.
Home manager Caroline Denny said: “When the gentleman came here he had been in several nursing homes but had to leave because his behaviour was too disruptive”
The resident was teamed up with nurse David Antill who had advanced training in behaviour management and de-escalation techniques. David learned to spot what would trigger episodes of anxiety and disruptive behaviour and taught other members of staff de-escalation techniques and to recognise triggers so that they could help to calm the resident before disruptive or violent behaviour developed.
Caroline said: “You would not believe this gentleman is the same person who came to us. He is much calmer and David and the staff are now able to take him out on shopping trips, which he loves – that’s an incredible way to come and it is all thanks to Cumberland’s dedicated team.”
