Lincoln lady knee’ds your help

Expert knee surgery from Care UK’s Barlborough NHS treatment centre has made it possible for a Lincoln lady to attempt a mammoth 260 mile cycle ride across part of China in order to raise money for a national children’s charity.

Now retired, the 65 year old has always worked with young children; her husband was in the forces so she has worked in nurseries in Germany and this passion for the wellbeing of young children has led her to take part in the charity cycling expedition in April 2011.  Money is being raised for Professor Robert Winston’s children’s charity.

Rita had a knee arthroscopy at Barlborough NHS Treatment Centre in June last year after the pain in her knee worsened.  Her GP recommended surgery at Barlborough as it enjoys both a good reputation and short waiting time.  Rita found the care and support at the Centre second to none.  She was very positive about having the treatment which has resulted in her being able to train and hopefully complete this very ambitious ride next year.

Rita puts her amazing recovery down to the skills of the team at Barlborough that cared for her and her own dedication to the physiotherapy that she was encouraged to  do after the operation.  She’s a perfect example of the benefits that patients can gain by faithfully carrying out exercises prescribed by Barlborough’s physiotherapists.  With the continued support from Barlborough NHS Treatment Centre and her own determination, Rita is confident of success on her cycling adventure.

Graeme Kendall, Manager at Care UK’s Barlborough NHS Treatment Centre said: “Rita’s dedication is amazing.  To have had surgery and sign up to this cycling challenge in China is truly inspiring.  I do hope that her story encourages other people who think that knee problems mean the end of an active lifestyle to think again.  And naturally I’m encouraging people to support Rita and sponsor the ride.”
