Barlborough’s 20,000th patient getting ready for salsa classes

Barlborough NHS Treatment Centre has welcomed the 20,000th patient through its doors. Melody Austin, a retired day services manager from Derby, was presented with a fabulous hamper of goodies by Graeme Kendall, the Centre manager following her post operative assessment.

Melody (pictured with her consultant, Dr. Frederic Farlin) initially had trouble with her right knee and underwent physiotherapy provided by her local GP surgery but then her left knee began to give her pain and discomfort. It was decided that this needed treatment first and her physiotherapist recommended that Melody undergo her treatment at Barlborough,

Melody said: “I was absolutely terrified about going into hospital, but I needn’t have been.  All the staff from the cleaners to surgeons were all happy and positive which really makes a difference.  My anaesthatist was a darling.”

Melody is going to need her other knee  joint replaced in the not too distant future and she really wants to go back to Barlborough for the procedure.  But for the time being she is looking forward to taking up salsa dancing classes.

Barlborough NHS Treatment Centre has been open for five years and provides high quality specialist orthopaedic care for the people of South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire.  The Centre has recently been inundated with letters/cards and emails supporting the hospital and praising its services and care following its uncertain future.

Graeme Kendall, manager of Barlborough, said: ”We are especially proud of our staff and the high quality treatment that we provide here for patients from across the region.  We thought that marking the occasion of the 20,000th patient to our hospital would highlight all the fantastic work that is undertaken here and show people that they do have a choice about where they can be treated.”
