Horley care home honours Remembrance Day with local school children

A Horley care home commemorated Remembrance Day with local pupils.

Residents and team members at Care UK’s Amherst House, on Court Lodge Road, welcomed pupils from Meath Green Junior School for a special history lesson with residents to commemorate Remembrance Day.

On the day, the children listened to wartime stories shared by residents who lived through World War Two, before asking them questions about what life was like back then.

103-year-old resident, Joyce Frogley, said: “Talking to children about the war is very important as we are losing a generation that can speak firsthand about what it was really like.  It’s so important that we remember the lives that were given and the sacrifices that were made to enable the way we live today.”

The home’s commemorations were made even more memorable by the appearance of the D-Day Dollies, a local entertaining group known for performing choreographed wartime favourites and 1940s hits.

Cristina Cristea, General Manager at Amherst House, said: “It was incredibly moving to see the interactions between residents and the children. These kinds of experiences help build relationships between the generations and offer insights that can’t be taught in a classroom. Remembrance Day is about honouring the past, and we did just that.

“The D-Day Dollies’ performance was spectacular and thoroughly enjoyed by the residents. It really was a heartfelt day for everyone involved. We’d like to say a big thank you to Meath Green Junior School for joining us!”

Amherst House has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives in a luxury environment. The home provides full-time residential care, nursing care, dementia care and respite care.
