A Newbury care home commemorated Remembrance Day with the local community.
Residents and team members at Care UK’s Winchcombe Place, on Maple Crescent, welcomed the public for a special parade and wreath laying in memory of those lost to war.
On the day, residents who either served or had family who served in the armed forces marched along the street in front of the home. A small service was then offered, before a trumpeter played a moving rendition of The Last Post.
The home was beautifully decorated with more than 700 poppies and welcomed a 1940s jeep to mark the poignant occasion.
Reflecting on the past, guests also had the opportunity to listen to wartime stories shared by residents who lived through World War Two, before asking them questions about what life was like back then.
Resident Kenneth Bellamy, 95, said: “It was a great day seeing so many people come together to remember. I served many years ago, so days like these are so important for me to remember. We must not ever forget.”
Clare Cullen, Home Manager at Winchcombe Place, added: “It was incredibly moving to see the residents laying their wreaths to remember our fallen heroes. We all wore our poppies with pride, to show our respect and keep their memory alive.
“At Winchcombe Place, we often spend time sharing memories and chatting about the history many of the residents have lived through – including World War Two. It is always emotional to hear memories from residents who served in the armed forces.
“The parade really was a heartfelt and poignant experience for everyone.”
Winchcombe Place is designed to deliver the very best standards of care, and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The homes offer a range of services including residential, nursing, dementia and short-term respite care.
