Quorn care home residents and pupils join forces for Harvest Festival fun

Home news

A care home in Quorn has joined forces with local primary school children to celebrate Harvest Festival.

Residents at Care UK’s Lonsdale Mews, on Farley Way, were joined by Thrussington Primary School children for an a-maize-ing afternoon as they celebrated the annual festival.

Everyone enjoyed a morning learning about the origins of the festival, what it means for today’s society, and why this long-standing tradition should not be forgotten. The youngsters and residents spent time together reading poetry and creating two giant collages featuring different vegetables and farmers using tractors to harvest their crops.

As part of the celebrations, the home hosted a seasonal service and residents visited the Harvest Festival service at Quorn Baptist Church. Residents also enjoyed making home-made tomato chutney, from tomato’s grown in the garden at Lonsdale Mews, and this was served with pumpkin bread made by the culinary team as part of Care UK’s baking competition.

Residents and team members are also encouraging the local community to donate their extra, unused or unwanted non-perishable food items to Quorn’s new foodbank drop-off-point – located in the care home’s reception. Donations will be made to Your Store at John Storer House and the drop-off point will be live at Lonsdale Mews until Thursday 31st October.

Commenting on the afternoon’s celebrations, resident Sandra Hill, aged 81, said: “It was such a lovely morning, I love the visits we have from the children. When I was a child, I remember being in the church choir and taking food to the alter during the Harvest Festival. I’m thrilled that the children still get involved and keep the tradition going.”

Toby Sturgess, Home Manager at Lonsdale Mews, said: “It was fantastic to welcome Thrussington Primary School children to Lonsdale Mews to celebrate the annual Harvest Festival tradition and explore its importance today.

“Harvest Festival is a day in the calendar where we can reflect and show gratitude for the food that we have, while serving as an opportunity to connect with others, regardless of age or background.

“Everyone had an a-maize-ing day and we’re already looking forward to our next event with Thrussington Primary School children as we race towards Christmas!”
