A care home in Bury St Edmunds welcomed a local ballet school for a magical afternoon.
Students at Bury St Edmunds Ballet School pirouetted into Care UK’s Glastonbury Court, on Glastonbury Road – much to the delight of residents.
On the day, the students put on a magnificent performance, featuring three separate costume changes, as well as an impressive choreography on pointe. After the show, residents had the opportunity to speak with the performers, and find out more about the art of ballet.
The day was particularly special for resident Hazel Jackson-Kemp who always loved the ballet but never got the chance to dance as a child. After Hazel’s daughter Karen was born, she began taking her to ballet lessons and performances, even handmaking tutus for her.
Hazel said: “It was lovely to see the children. It reminded me of my daughter dancing and how much she loved to dance.”
Commenting on the afternoon, resident Margaret Kavanagh said: “Watching them has brought me back to my childhood, it was so lovely.”
Betty Dunn, another resident, added: “They were absolutely fantastic, professional and to see such talent like that is so special.”
Ana Mihai, Home Manager at Glastonbury Court, said: “We had an amazing time watching students at Bury St Edmunds Ballet School perform – this was definitely an afternoon to remember for residents.
“Dancing, although in a different form, played a big part in residents’ lives and many have fond memories of attending balls and tea dances. The activity gave everyone a wonderful opportunity to reminisce on their younger years, while watching ballet up close – which was a first for many of them.
“Here at Glastonbury Court, we are passionate about helping residents’ dreams come true, whether that be welcoming furry friends into the home or a performance from young ballerinas.
“We’d like to say a big thank you to the performers, and we hope to welcome them into the home again soon.”
Glastonbury Court is a modern care home providing full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the home has its very own cinema and hair salon, and there is plenty of space both in and outdoors for relaxation and recreation.
