Sussex care homes host sports days for local community

Home news

With the Olympics fast approaching, care homes across Sussex are limbering up for their very own sporting tournaments.

Four Care UK homes in the area will be bringing Paris to Sussex as they open their doors to local people to enjoy their own version of the Games.

The event comes as the homes join The Big Care UK Sports Day, which sees over 130 Care UK homes across the UK host sports days for the local community and showcase what life in a care home is really like.

Across Sussex, events will be taking place at:

  • Chichester Grange, on Grosvenor Road, Chichester on Saturday 20th July from 2.30pm-5.30pm
  • Heather View, on Beacon Road, Crowborough on Tuesday 23rd July, from 2pm
  • Skylark House, on St Mark’s Lane, Horsham on Wednesday 24th July, from 2.30pm-4.30pm
  • Bowes House, on Battle Road, Hailsham on Thursday 25th July, from 1pm-4pm

Guests can soak up the sporting atmosphere and, for those daring to compete, have the chance to win their own gold medals with an afternoon of fun and games, including egg-and-spoon races, tug of war and other Sports Day classics.

Visitors can also enjoy a range of summer refreshments cooked on the barbecue, while tapping their toes to music throughout the day. At Bowes House, there will also be a photobooth on-site to help capture special memories from the day.

Emma Ballard, Home Manager at Bowes House, said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming the local community to join our own sporting celebrations.

“We are part of a strong community here in Sussex, and days like this are a fantastic way of bringing us all together for a little healthy competition and to celebrate this year’s summer of sport, all while showcasing exactly what life is like in a care home.”

Nikki Burke, Home Manager at Chichester Grange, added: “The day not only promises a lot of laughter and enjoyment for all involved, but also is an excellent way for residents to meet and mingle with lots of new faces – and some familiar ones – while keeping active. We can’t wait until kick-off!”
