A national care watchdog has given an Aberdeen care home its seal of approval ahead of a significant investment.
Care UK’s Tor-Na-Dee, on North Deeside Road, has now achieved ‘very good’ ratings by the Care Inspectorate in the ‘leadership’ and ‘people’s wellbeing’ categories.
Inspectors were impressed with the warm, welcoming atmosphere within the home. Throughout their visit, they noted that team members were ‘kind, compassionate and respectful when interacting with people’; a sentiment that was echoed by residents. One said: “the lads are just wonderful”.
Residents’ involvement in their own care, as well as the home’s dedication to promoting independence, were praised in the report. Inspectors highlighted the level of detail personal plans contain, and the way residents’ preference, choices and wishes are front and centre – contributing to the ethos of ‘people being experts in their own care and support’.
The plans also include ways to support residents in meaningful ways. As a result, inspectors noted that all activities are organised with residents’ wellbeing front of mind, from painting and gardening to relaxing ‘Namaste’ sessions, featuring gentle hand massages and calming music.
The leadership was rated ‘very good’, and inspectors were impressed with the ‘supportive culture’ within the home. A relative added: “Tor-Na-Dee has excellent management, which reflects in the quality and happiness of staff and residents.”
Maureen Barrett, Home Manager at Tor-Na-Dee, said: “I am incredibly proud of the team here at Tor-Na-Dee, and to lead such a caring and determined team.
“Here at Tor-Na-Dee, we see beyond residents' age and strive to understand their personalities, hobbies and passions. Everything we do is tailored to the residents and how they want to live their lives. I’d like to say a big thank you to the team for their hard work; we are all thrilled to have received this official praise from the national inspectors.”
In addition, Care UK, has recently secured around a £2.5 million pound investment to upgrade and expand its services at the Tor Na Dee care home site. The refurbishment will include an upgrade to the communal areas within the existing Tor Na Dee care home, and due to the demand for its high-quality services, there will be a significant conversion of the adjoining building to offer an additional 20-bedroom premium residential care model.
Maureen added: “There have been some unfounded rumours about the future of the service, but Care UK is here to stay. This investment in the long-term future and expansion of the service is evidence of our commitment to continuing to deliver outstanding care for residents for years to come.”
Tor-Na-Dee, which has recently received a seven-figure investment to upgrade and expand its services, provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has its very own cinema room and hairdressers, and there is plenty of space both indoors and out for relaxation and recreation.
