New Shrewsbury care home shortlisted for prestigious national award

Home news

A care home in Shrewsbury is celebrating after being named as a finalist for a prestigious national award.

Care UK’s Oxbow Manor, on Oteley Road, has been nominated for the ‘Best New Care Home’ in the Care Home Awards 2024.

The Care Home Awards recognise teams and individuals that epitomise excellence, innovation, dedication and outstanding contributions within the care sector.

Oxbow Manor, which opened its doors last year, stood out from the competition thanks to its commitment to cultivating strong relationships with the local community. This includes the home’s pioneering partnership with Safe Ageing No Discrimination (SAND), which works to improve the experiences of those in the LGBTQ+ community when accessing health and social care services.

The team and residents also work closely with dementia churches, local food banks and baby banks, which recently included a donation of clothes specially knitted by resident Margaret.

The home also stood out for its person-centred approach to care. Team members spend time getting to know residents’ likes and dislikes so they can arrange tailored activities and outings..

Beyond activities, the home also has a Wishing Tree, designed to enable residents to make wishes – whether it’s trying something new or revisiting past hobbies or careers. One resident wished to ride in an American car, so a team member’s son geared up taking the resident for a spin in their Corvette. Another resident was unable to attend their son’s wedding, so the team brought the party to Oxbow Manor. The local florist arranged a bouquet to match the brides and one carer got their neighbour – who is a local celebrant – to organise a second wedding at the home.

One relative commented: “Oxbow Manor has exceeded my expectations in every aspect… words alone are not enough to thank everyone for making us feel safe and secure in such a warm, clean and well-managed environment.”

Another relative said: “Oxbow Manor care home is a beautiful home. All of the staff are so kind, friendly and helpful and the home has a wonderfully calm atmosphere.”

Emma Tillyer, Home Manager at Oxbow Manor, added: “We’re thrilled to have been nominated for a national award – it’s incredibly rewarding to have the strong relationships we’ve worked hard to build with the local community, family and friends recognised nationally, especially so soon after we’ve opened.

“We work so hard to create a warm, family atmosphere to ensure that residents and team members feel like they are part of the Oxbow Manor family. We love hosting activities and events which allow residents to thrive and flourish, either by reminiscing about a past interest, or by trying something new for the very first time.

“I am really proud of the team and what they achieve on a daily basis through their dedication and passion for residents. We’re all keeping our fingers crossed for a win later this year!”

The winners and finalists will be celebrated at the Royal Garden Hotel, London, on Friday 17th May.

Oxbow Manor is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the home has its very own cinema, café and hair salon, and there is plenty of space – both indoors and out – for relaxation and recreation.
