Kingston Vale youngsters and care home residents are on the same page for World Book Day

A care home in Kingston Vale was joined by local school children to celebrate World Book Day.

Residents at Care UK’s Sherwood Grange, on Robin Hood Lane, welcomed children from Robin Hood Primary and Nursery School for an afternoon of fun, spent listening to their favourite books read aloud by the residents.

In honour of World Book Day, the children arrived at the care home dressed in their favourite book characters. From Peter Pan to Snow White, the children made their way into the home’s lounge which had been turned into the perfect setting for a fairy tale storytelling session, complete with blankets, toys and fairy lights.

As the children made themselves comfy, 15 residents, including Rosemary Lester, 80, quickly got into their characters to read a retelling of Winnie the Pooh.

Commenting on the afternoon, resident Ilene Pearce, 94, said: “It was lovely to hear the children reading Winnie the Pooh and a real treat to spend time chatting with them afterwards and seeing the books they had with them.”

Kristina Jacunskiene, Home Manager at Sherwood Grange, said: “We were delighted to celebrate World Book Day with our young friends at Robin Hood Primary and Nursery School.

“Here at Sherwood Grange, we enjoy building relationships across the generations as it can help encourage a strong sense of wellbeing and purpose for residents, while both generations can enjoy learning from each other. It was wonderful to see the residents reminiscing over their favourite stories and times gone by reading stories to their own children and grandchildren.

“We’re already looking forward to welcoming back the pupils from Robin Hood Primary and Nursery School very soon.”

Sherwood Grange has been designed to encourage residents to live active and fulfilling lives, while remaining as independent as possible in a safe environment. The state-of-the-art care home features a cinema, hair salon and art studio, and incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The layout of the building is configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room, to facilitate the creation of close-knit communities.
