“Keeping busy” – the secret to a long life according to 100-year-old Chelmsford care home resident

A 100-year-old Chelmsford care home resident has revealed her secret to living a long and happy life.

Sybil Logan, from Care UK’s Manor Lodge on Manor Road, marked her 100th birthday on 1st March. Reflecting on her many happy years, Sybil shared that her motto for life is “keeping busy”.

To mark the big day, Sybil’s family joined her at the home for a special celebration, and the team decorated the home with balloons and banners. The home’s talented Head Chef also baked a birthday cake for everyone to enjoy.

Commenting on the occasion, Sybil said: “It was wonderful seeing her family all together.”

Maggie Ziemianska, Acting Home Manager at Manor Lodge, added: “Sybil is a much-loved resident here at Manor Lodge and we all had a wonderful time celebrating her special day.

“We work hard to support residents to lead fulfilling lives, and marking special occasions and birthdays plays a huge part in this. We love any excuse to celebrate the amazing people living here at Manor Lodge and Sybil’s birthday was no exception. Everyone had a wonderful time toasting Sybil’s birthday and listening to her share memories from her long, happy life.

“We’re all incredibly privileged to have Sybil as part of the Manor Lodge family – happy birthday!”

Sybil was born in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, in 1924, where she lived until she moved to Saffron Walden in her early 20s to train as a nurse.

While in Saffron Walden, Sybil met her late husband, Sandy, who was working as a doctor. Together, the pair have a son, Ian, and two daughters, Sheena and Rowena, as well as five grandchildren.

Avid travellers, Sybil and Sandy spent an adventurous retirement exploring the world, visiting many countries including Singapore, Australia, America and Canada.

In her spare time, Sybil loved gardening and tennis – activities which she continues to keep busy with at Manor Lodge.

Manor Lodge is a modern care home which provides full-time residential, dementia nursing and short-term respite care. Designed to enable its residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has its very own cinema and hair salon, and there is plenty of space both in and outdoors for relaxation and recreation.
