‘Stand up tall and smile’ – Local care home resident reveals the secret to a long life on 100th birthday

A resident at a care home in Windsor celebrated her 100th birthday by sharing the secret to a long and happy life.

A very special birthday celebration took place at Care UK’s Mountbatten Grange, on Helston Lane, when resident Margaret Lawrence celebrated her 100th birthday in style. To mark the occasion, Margaret revealed her secret to longevity is to “always put your shoulders back, stand tall and smile”.

To mark the big day, the team at Mountbatten Grange decorated the home’s bistro area with balloons and banners, and the home’s talented chef baked a special birthday cake for everyone to enjoy.

Margaret was born on the 21st July 1923 in Barrow-in Furness, Cumbria. She went onto work in the local town hall in the rates office where she worked on business rates and taxes.

Margaret married John Edward (also known as Jack) in 1946. The pair were very happily married for 40 years. They had three children together, two girls and one boy.

Margaret now has five grandchildren, eight great children and one great, great grandson.

During her life, Margaret has taught at her local Sunday School and was involved with the Girl Guides and is referred to by many as their surrogate mum.

Debbie Winwood, Home Manager at Mountbatten Grange, said: “It’s a huge privilege for us to be able to celebrate impressive milestones and Margaret’s birthday was no exception. We had a wonderful time celebrating her 100th birthday.

“We work hard to support residents to lead fulfilling lives here at Mountbatten Grange, and marking special occasions and birthdays plays a huge part in this. Happy birthday Margaret from everyone at Mountbatten Grange!”
