“Have a glass of wine!” – Local care home resident reveals secret to long life on 100th birthday

A resident at a care home in Woking celebrated her 100^th birthday and shared the secret to a long and happy life.

A very special birthday party took place at Care UK’s Greenview Hall, on Streets Heath, when resident Audrey Thrower celebrated her 100^th birthday in style. She also revealed her secret to longevity, which is “having a glass of wine and enjoying food”.

To mark the big day, the team decorated the home’s café with balloons and banners, Audrey’s family and friends joined the celebrations, and the home’s chef baked a special birthday cake for everyone to enjoy. 

Audrey was born on 17^th May 1923, in London. She left school aged 14 and joined the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS), where she was stationed in Scotland for a number of years.

She then worked for BOC Ltd, a British based multinational, industrial gas company, which is where she met her husband, Ron. They married in 1949 and had three children, and she now has three grandchildren. 

In her younger years, Audrey’s passion was travelling. She has visited over 24 countries with her favourite being Italy.  

She was also a very good seamstress and would make herself and her children’s clothes.
