“It wasn’t love at first sight!” – Cringleford residents celebrate 64 years of marriage

Love was in the air at a Cringleford care home when two residents celebrated a very special milestone. 

Stanley (Stan) Thompson, aged 91, and his wife Nancy, aged 86, toasted their 64^th wedding anniversary at Care UK’s Cavell Court, on Dragonfly Lane, where they both live. 

Stan and Nancy met at a local dance in Norwich, in 1957, where the pair fell head over heels for one another. The couple kept on their dancing shoes as they marked their first official date with another dance in the Princess of Wales dance hall. 

The couple went on to marry two years later, on 30^th March 1959 at St Andrews and St Peter Church, Norwich. Together, Stan and Nancy have two daughters, Frankie and Sue, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

When asked about Nancy, Stan recalled thinking she looked “nice” when he first met her at the dance. Commenting on her first impression of Stan, Nancy said: “I thought he was quite alright but it wasn’t love at first sight!”

To toast the special milestone, team members at Cavell Court decorated the home’s coffee shop with balloons and banners for the occasion. Going above and beyond to ensure it was a special day, the team also surprised Stan and Nancy by inviting their family along to join the celebrations.

We were honoured to be a part of such a special moment for Stan and Nancy. They are truly inseparable, and we can all learn a thing or two from their long-lasting marriage.   

“Marking such a special occasion at the home allowed many of the residents to reminisce and share fond memories of their own wedding days, which was lovely to hear. Happy anniversary, Stan and Nancy!”
