Residents at a Harrow care home are giving back to the community using their gardening skills.
Five residents from Care UK’s Buchanan Court, on Sudbury Hill, put their green fingers to good use by bringing a touch of spring to the entrance of Clementine Churchill Hospital.
The flowery display saw two large plant pots with colourful flower arrangements pop up just outside the hospital entrance to mark the start of spring.
Residents and team members met with the senior management team at the hospital to mark the beginning of a blossoming relationship between the home and the hospital’s gardening team, who helped the residents complete the stunning display.
Esther Oluwatosin Adams, Home Manager at Buchanan Court, said: “Being part of the community is essential to life here at Buchanan Court, and decorating our local hospital is our way of thanking them for their support.
“Many residents at the home have a passion for gardening, so everyone was thrilled to take part in this initiative. Gardening has many therapeutic benefits for older people, especially those living with dementia, as it encourages physical activity and also time spent outdoors. It can give older people a sense of purpose and stimulate memories, while also lowering stress and anxiety levels.
“We look forward to seeing our plants continue to blossom and working on more garden projects around the local community in the future.”
Buchanan Court provides full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable its residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has its very own bar and hair salon, and there is plenty of space both in and outdoors for relaxation and recreation.
