To celebrate the annual RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch last weekend, birds and wildlife of all shapes and sizes were spotted at a care home in Sutton.
Residents at Care UK’s Tennyson Grange, on Westmead Road, took part in the world’s largest annual wildlife survey, and enjoyed bird-themed art classes and making fat balls, which were hung in the care homes garden to attract birds.
The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch encourages people throughout the UK to take a closer look at the nature on their doorsteps by counting the different birds, as well as recording any non-bird species such as badgers and hedgehogs, which visit their garden in any one hour.
To help identify the birds flying across the home’s garden, residents have been enjoying painting and drawing different species from nature books.
Rick Mayne, General Manager at Tennyson Grange said: “As well as helping to support an important national initiative from the RSPB, the Birdwatch also provided an excellent opportunity for nature-loving residents to either spend time in the garden listening to bird song, or to spot visiting birds and wildlife from the comfort of our lounge overlooking the garden.
“At Tennyson Grange, we support residents to participate in outdoor and sensory activities as they can boost emotional and physical wellbeing, as well as help residents to live meaningful and fulfilled lives. The Birdwatch also proved to be a valuable relaxing activity for those living with dementia, and everyone enjoyed spotting and naming the many bird and wildlife species which paid us a visit over the weekend.”
Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence,Tennyson Grange, incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The layout of the home has been configured to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
