A story that’s plot on – Worcester care home welcomes local author

A care home in Worcester organised a very special reading session with local author Gillian Young and primary school children as part of a nationwide initiative to celebrate National Storytelling Week.

Care UK’s Perry Manor, on Charles Hastings Way, welcomed King’s St Alban’s Prep School into the home for a retelling of Poppy Loves Devon by children’s author Gillian Young.

To celebrate National Storytelling Week, Care UK has created the Bedtime Stories initiative which sees residents across the UK read classic bedtime stories to young children. The campaign, which includes the launch of four free videos of residents reading famous stories, ensures children who may not have a grandparent do not miss out on a magical tale before bedtime.

Commenting on the reading session, Wayne Roberts, 78-year-old resident at Perry Manor, said: “I enjoyed listening to the story with the children and the mood the author set was lovely – reading is important because it expands your knowledge”.

Katherine Matthews, Home Manager at Perry Manor, said: “We were delighted to welcome Gillian Young, author of books including, Poppy Loves Devon, and Tammy and Willow, into the home to carry out a special reading session with residents and the children from King’s St Alban’s.

“Residents and pupils were able to enjoy using their imagination while listening to Gillian read her book. We all remember stories told to us as children, often before bedtime by a grandparent or parent, and find comfort in adulthood in these nostalgic memories.

“We would like to thank Gillian for entertaining us with her reading and hope to welcome her back through the doors of Perry Manor very soon.”
