Walk this way – Edinburgh care home steps up to the plate for charity

Residents and team members at an Edinburgh care home have been getting active for a very good cause.

Care UK’s Murrayside, on South Beechwood, raised £400 for the Space and Broomhouse Hub by completing a special steps challenge.

The Space and Broomhouse Hub, the residents’ chosen charity, is located in Edinburgh. It offers services for the local community, including a day club to reduce loneliness and isolation among older people, and a youth club for families. It also provides a space for local events and includes its own kitchen and café, featuring locally sourced produce.

As part of the challenge, residents, relatives and team members were all given a pedometer for a month to record their progress. In total, they completed millions of steps - 363,990 of which were completed by resident Alan Westlake alone.

Alan, 87, commented: “I always try to stay fit and healthy, and the step challenge was a great way to challenge myself!”

Suzanne Welsh, Home Manager at Murrayside, said: “We love a challenge here at Murrayside – especially when it’s for a good cause.

“Our step challenge was a great opportunity to support a wonderful organisation, the Space and Broomhouse Hub, all while encouraging everyone to get active. Walking especially is a fantastic activity for older people – it’s accessible, gentle on the joints and often encourages residents to get outside and explore, which does wonders for the mood.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who got involved or donated. We’re already looking forward to our next challenge – and we hope to visit the Space and Broomhouse Hub very soon.”

Murrayside care home has been specially designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities, and has its own cinema, hair salon and café.
