Pen-tastic! Pupils pen Christmas letters to care home residents

Schoolchildren visited a Shinfield care home to hand out festive letters and cards to residents.

Pupils were delighted to visit Care UK’s Parsons Grange, on Westall Street, to distribute Christmas cards and letters that they had penned for specific resident friends.

The local children, from Crosfield School in Reading, have been visiting the care home over the past few months to spend time with residents. During their visits, the pupils have been able to sit and chat with the residents as well as playing musical instruments, telling jokes and playing chess and dominoes.

Recipients of the cards and letters opened them in front of the pupils and read aloud the messages. For some letters, the children had also drawn illustrations and enjoyed talking them through the images. One picture included a winter scene, complete with Father Christmas and his reindeers, and another had a colourful image of Pudsey.

Rozina Ali, Home Manager at Parsons Grange, said: “These young people have been coming through our doors for the past few months so it was wonderful to end the year with personal letters and cards from the children.

“Intergenerational activities are brilliant for both the residents and the younger people they are interacting with. Not only are they a great way of stimulating the mind, but they allow the residents to share stories and reminisce about when they were the same age as the pupils.”

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Parsons Grange care home has been designed with residents in mind. The home has plenty of space for leisure and hobby activities as well as a café, hair salon, bar and a cinema for residents to enjoy.
