Residents at a local care home welcomed the Chelsea Pensioners for an afternoon tea party.
Team members at Care UK’s Elizabeth Lodge, on Pennington Drive, opened the doors to London’s Chelsea Pensioners who joined residents for a quintessential British lunch prepared by the home’s head chef. Residents sat down with the pensioners to enjoy afternoon tea, including sandwiches, scones, and cakes.
Residents enjoyed hearing stories from the pensioner’s time serving in the Armed Forces and their roles and responsibilities being a Chelsea Pensioner. The Chelsea Pensioners are the iconic faces of the UK’s veteran community who all once served their country. They reside at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, a retirement and nursing home for former members of the British Army.
Michelle Sampang, Home Manager at Elizabeth Lodge, said: “We had a fantastic time welcoming the Chelsea Pensioners to our home for an afternoon tea party.
“It was wonderful to hear the residents and pensioners share stories of camaraderie and friendship. It was also fascinating to hear about the places they visited, despite the incredibly challenging circumstances they overcame while serving in the forces. Many residents shared photos and medals too, which was great to see.
“Afternoons like these are a great way to encourage reminiscence, which can be beneficial for older people, especially those living with dementia. We’d like to say a big thank you to the Chelsea Pensioners for sharing their memories with us and for coming along to our home.”
