Stanley care home nurse manager shortlisted for a national award

Home achievement

A care home in Stanley is celebrating their Deputy Manager being named as a finalist in the Nursing Times Workforce Awards 2022.

The Deputy Manager, Sheena Henderson, at Care UK’s Stanley Park, on Wear Road, has been shortlisted in the ‘Nurse Manager of the Year’ category, which recognises outstanding leadership qualities in those bringing a positive impact to the profession.

The awards recognise the brightest talent in workforce planning and highlights those making a difference in recruitment, staff retention, wellbeing and inclusion. The winners will be announced at the annual awards ceremony in November.

Sheena is the driving force behind the home’s award-winning gardens, which have enhanced the lives of the residents and their families beyond measure. With the majority of the home’s residents having varying degrees of dementia, Sheena put forward an innovative idea to help create a unique and calming space for residents to enjoy.

Going above and beyond, Sheena’s idea has seen Stanley Park create a tranquillity garden, complete with new seating areas, and a space inspired by trips to the beach. The garden also features a train station inspired area, with a waiting room, luggage and hanging baskets, creating a feel of sitting on a platform. waiting for a train. The different outdoor spaces allow residents to experience a new atmosphere, bringing lots of benefits to their wellbeing.

The tranquillity garden is an area for quiet contemplation and includes calming features such as a water fountain and pastel pink and white flowers. This new environment also acts as a talking point for residents living with dementia who may otherwise struggle to communicate and allows everyone to enjoy a change of scenery. One resident at the home used to be very anxious and so Sheena and the team took the time to encourage her to sit and colour outdoors in the garden, which has had a significantly positive impact on her wellbeing.

Dedicated to mentoring her team, Sheena takes time to train and help support colleagues to develop their knowledge, putting them on track to becoming champions in an area of care. Praised by the whole team for her continued approachability, Sheena is valued greatly at the home. Her combined understanding of how to deliver the best care to those with dementia, paired with her natural ability to lead and help those around her to learn and progress in their careers, has made Sheena is truly indispensable.

Sheena said: “I am completely overwhelmed at reaching this stage in the Nursing Times Awards. I only hope I can do the residents and the team at Stanley Park proud”.

Christine Gibson, Home Manager at Stanley Park, added: “We are thrilled to see Sheena shortlisted in the ‘Nurse Manager of the Year’ category.

“Sheena is passionate about residents and ensuring they are cared for in the best way possible – and this shines through in her work each and every day. She always takes the time to check in with residents and colleagues to be sure that we are all providing exceptional care and ensuring residents lead fulfilling lives. Her dedication to upskilling herself and the team, alongside her work ethic, is truly commendable and everybody here always sings her praises.

“Sheena brings a unique blend of expertise when it comes to her vast knowledge and skills in the care sector, and inspires others to raise the bar too – we are so lucky to have you Sheena, huge congrats from us all and we’ll keep our fingers crossed for a win!”
