Purley care home worker of 23-years makes the finals in national awards

A local care home in Purley is celebrating after being shortlisted in this year’s Caring UK Awards.

Janet Janes, a Team Leader at Care UK’s Amberley Lodge, on Downlands Road, has made it to the final stage in the ‘Lifetime Achievement in Care’ category in the national awards. 

The national awards celebrate and reward excellence and team effort in care homes across the UK. 

 

Janet started her career within this sector in 1989 after becoming a carer for both her father and  mother-in-law who lived with dementia and Alzheimer’s, respectively. Passionate about providing high-quality care for those in need, Janet joined Amberley Lodge in 1999 after the then Home Manager personally asked her to be part of the team since Janet had gained such a fantastic reputation within the region for her work. 

Throughout her career, Janet has remained committed to improving her knowledge and expertise. In 2000, she was one of the first to take part in an accredited Alzheimer’s training course and takes a lead role in implementing the Gold Standard Framework for end-of-life care at Amberley Lodge. This ensures new team members have the knowledge and confidence to understand how best to support residents and their families.  

Commenting on Janet’s care, a resident’s relative said: “The best way I can describe Janet is she goes above and beyond her duties with kindness, and a smile on her face, because she takes pride and enjoyment in the duties she performs.”

A GP, who regularly visits Amberley Lodge, also added: “Janet has always been a fantastic member of the team at Amberley Lodge. She has just the right balance of common sense, reliability, and always has an air of calm around her. I know I can trust her clinical judgement regarding whether a resident is unwell or not. Despite not being trained as a nurse or doctor, she could easily have been either in my opinion.”

Azalea Moses, Home Manager at Amberley Lodge, said: “We are thrilled to see Janet shortlisted in the ‘Lifetime Achievement in Care’ category at this years’ Caring UK Awards. When I joined Amberley Lodge six years ago, I was inducted by Janet who really showed me the way.

“Being shortlisted is testament to Janet’s hard work and her commitment to providing an outstanding service throughout her career to ensure every resident who comes into her care leads a happy and fulfilling life. “It is truly inspiring to observe her interactions between the residents and their relatives and I’m thrilled she is being recognised for the difference she makes each day to the residents.

The awards will take place at the Athena Events Venue on December 1st 2022.
