A national care watchdog has given an Edinburgh care home its seal of approval, with relatives and residents praising its caring team members.
The Care Inspectorate, the regulator for health and social care in Scotland, gave Care UK’s Murrayside, on South Beechwood, an overall ‘Good’ rating in its report, following an unannounced inspection.
Promoting a holistic approach to care, the report highlighted the strong relationships team members have formed with residents and noted the way they support those in their care to live independent and fulfilling lives. Inspectors noted the five-star rating for the setting, and strong training in dementia care, which allowed team members to assist residents who are anxious in a calming and caring way.
Inspectors were impressed with the range of activities on offer, which included games, pet therapy and physical exercises. The team are also trained in Namaste care, which incorporates physical, sensory and emotional approaches into the care of those living with advanced dementia, to encourage relaxation in residents.
The report also highlighted the home’s strong relationships with relatives, who told inspectors: “there is good communication” and “the activities staff are good at picking up what she [resident] enjoys and good at encouraging her to take part”.
Suzanne Welsh, Home Manager at Murrayside, said: “Everyone at Murrayside works hard to provide the highest possible standards of care to all residents and their families in a warm, comfortable environment, so I’m proud we received a ‘Good’ Care Inspectorate rating.
“Every resident is unique – so why should their care plan be any different? We pride ourselves in the high-quality tailored care we provide, enabling residents to lead fulfilling lives in a warm, peaceful environment that has been designed to promote independence and support those who live at the home.
“I would like to say a big thank you to everyone at Murrayside for their dedication, which I know is also greatly appreciated by residents and their families. They are what makes our care home a home for so many residents, and I’m grateful for everything they do on a daily basis.”
To assess service standards at Murrayside, the Care Inspectorate inspectors spoke with team members, residents, and their visiting relatives on the day of the inspection. They also reviewed the records and procedures already in place at the care home.
Murrayside care home has been specially designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities, and has its own cinema, hair salon and café.
