Longest serving UK radio actor retires from The Archers aged 103

A 103-year-old Care UK care home resident has retired from The Archers after 60 years recording the programme.

June Brocksom CBE, professionally known as June Spencer, from a Care UK care home, filmed her final episode of The Archers after first joining the radio drama serial in 1950 for the programme’s pilot episode.

Born in Nottingham in 1919, June left Nottingham Girl’s High School to study music and drama. Eventually gaining her L.G.S.M diploma in drama. June began her radio career in 1943 and in 1950 became a founder member of the cast of The Archers.

June played the role of Peggy Woolley, previously Peggy Archer, who serves as the soap’s main matriarchal character. The Independent newspaper once described June’s voice as ‘the epitome of reassurance’, noting that her character has become a ‘fixture’ in kitchens and sitting rooms for daytime drama. Today, June is the second-longest-serving actor in a radio serials worldwide.

Commenting on her time on the programme, June said: “I have loved being part of The Archers. It always felt like I was a part of something good, where listeners to the programme could relate to the storylines and take comfort they weren’t alone.

“There are so many storylines I’m proud to have been a part of, especially ones which dealt with important topics such as Alzheimer’s. Although my personal favourite was Jack and Peggy’s wedding in 1991 and an episode we broadcast from the horse guards’ parade after being invited to record at the Queen Mother’s 100th birthday celebrations."

Jeni Rushton, a Regional Director at Care UK, added: “June is a much-loved resident, and we are thrilled to raise a glass to her to celebrate her fantastic career.

“June’s work ethic is an inspiration to us all and her commitment and dedication to remain active and continue pursuing her interests is something we can all learn from. Congratulations on such a fabulous career, June!”

June’s final episode playing Peggy Woolley was aired on BBC Radio 4 on Sunday 31st July.
