Breaking the ice – Edinburgh residents swept up in the excitement of winter sports

Residents at a local care home have kept their cool during the home’s very special winter sports-themed activities.

Residents and team members at Care UK’s Murrayside, on South Beechwood, brought the Winter Olympics to Edinburgh by competing in their very own curling event.

Inspired by Edinburgh Olympians Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds, residents showcased their competitive spirit during a game of curling in one of the home’s corridors, using brooms and mops, as well as a real curling stone. The activity also gave many residents an opportunity to reminisce about their younger years enjoying winter sports and share their top curling and winter sports tips with others.

A special ‘winter photoshoot’ was also organised to commemorate the occasion, complete with a ski resort backdrop.

Sandra, a resident at Murrayside, said: “We had so much fun with the skis and skates – it brought lots of memories to the surface! We’d been cheering on the GB curling team too, so we decided to have a go ourselves. We had a great time.”

Suzanne Welsh, Home Manager at Murrayside, said: “Here at Murrayside, we know just how important physical activity is when it comes to overall wellbeing, so we always encourage residents to stay active – so our own Winter Olympics-themed activity was a great, topical way to do just that.

“Like any international event, the Olympics showcases our undisputed national pride while offering an opportunity to reminisce on past editions of the Games. With so many residents here fond of winter sports, it’s fair to say we all learnt a thing or two too.

“We’d like to say good luck to all of the British athletes – we certainly won a few medals of our own here!”

Murrayside care home has been specially designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities, and has its own cinema, hair salon and café.
