Legends in the baking – Sutton Coldfield care home residents showcase their culinary skills

Residents at a care home in Sutton Coldfield received a standing oven-tion when they took part in a special baking competition.

Care UK’s Mercia Grange, on Lichfield Road, hosted ‘The Great Mercia Bake Off’, with residents challenged to cook up their favourite baked treats.

To show they have ‘what it cakes’ to be crowned star bakers, teams, made of residents and colleagues, representing the home’s suites, showcased their skills by preparing and decorating yule logs to get in the Christmas spirit.

Sheila Lowman, 82 who was crowned star baker, said: “I loved decorating cookies and the chocolate logs, it reminds me of the time I was doing it with my kids.”

Antony Gatley, Home Manager at Mercia Grange, said: “We are all big fans of the Bake Off here at Mercia Grange, and we never miss a single episode.

“With so many enthusiastic, skilled bakers living at the home, we felt hosting our own version of the competition was the best way to determine once and for all who are Mercia Grange’s true ‘star bakers’. Everyone got very competitive, and we were blown away by the residents’ creativity – it was hard to pick a winner.

“There were no Hollywood handshakes given that day, but every cake got the thumbs’ up from our head chef. We’re looking forward to hosting our next baking challenge very soon!”
