Baking the world a better place – East Grinstead residents honour national hero

Home news

A local care home cooked up a storm as part of a national initiative to honour Sir Captain Tom Moore.

The team and residents at Care UK’s Mill View, on Sunnyside Close, got involved in the ‘Captain Tom 100’ challenge by baking and decorating 100 cupcakes. The cupcakes were donated to those in the community, including residents at Meadow Court retirement housing in East Grinstead.

Baking the world a better place – East Grinstead residents honour national heroThe 100 cupcakes were baked by the home’s chefs, and then hand decorated with colourful icing by residents, as a nod to the 100 laps Sir Tom Moore completed around his garden that raised millions for the NHS.

The ‘Captain Tom 100’ challenge was created by Sir Captain Tom Moore’s family as a way to inspire others to follow in his footsteps and let themselves be inspired by the number 100.

Gladys Walter, a resident at Mill View, said: "It was a wonderful idea and Captain Tom deserves to be remembered. We all enjoyed being part of it."

Rachel Woodward, Home Manager at Mill View, said: “Captain Sir Tom Moore was a beacon of light at the height of the pandemic this time last year. His determination to walk 100 laps around his garden to raise funds for the NHS inspired the entire nation and gave us hope throughout such challenging times.

“We were deeply saddened to hear of his passing earlier this year, so when his family created the ‘Captain Tom 100’ challenge in his memory, we knew we had to get involved. Baking is an activity we all enjoy at Mill View, so it seemed fitting that we create cupcakes and then share them with our wonderful friends in the community here in East Grinstead.”
