Special deliver-tea – Shinfield care home treats local community members

A care home in Shinfield is combating loneliness among older people with a tasty initiative.

Throughout March, Care UK’s Parsons Grange, on Westall Street, has been creating afternoon tea parcels for those in the community who need a treat the most.

Special deliver-tea – Shinfield care home treats local community membersThe parcels, put together by Shelby, the home’s Customer Relations Manager, contain everything needed for a classic British afternoon tea, including finger sandwiches, scones, cupcakes and tea, and are delivered weekly to those nominated by their loved ones. The initiative, which was ran every Thursday throughout March, surprised 24 people in the community with the special delivery.

Anthony Browne, Home Manager at Parsons Grange, added: “Millions of older people in the UK suffer from loneliness and may feel isolated, especially while living within the current pandemic restrictions – so we want to show them that we’re here to provide help and support, however we can.

“There’s nothing like a tasty afternoon tea to brighten up a grey day, and our extremely talented chef, Josh, certainly knows how to make perfect scones. We started putting together parcels and reached out to members of the community asking them to nominate their loved ones or elderly neighbours.

“It’s been touching to read all the incredibly lovely nominations we received, and we’re pleased we were able to put a smile on our fellow community members’ faces. We hope everyone enjoyed their afternoon tea, and we’re looking forward to being able to welcome everyone back into the home for a tea and a chat once restrictions are lifted!”

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Parsons Grange care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The layout of the building has been configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to help encourage the creation of close-knit communities.
