Bury St Edmunds care home shortlisted for national award

A care home in Bury St Edmunds is celebrating after being shortlisted in the Care Home Awards 2021.

Care UK’s Davers Court, on Shakers Lane, has been shortlisted in the ‘Best Individual Care Home or Care Community’ category, which recognises individual homes for the exceptional quality of their services.

Bury St Edmunds care home shortlisted for national awardThe Care Home Awards recognise and reward excellence and innovation in UK care home management, operation and delivery. The winners will be announced at the annual awards ceremony in September.

The team at Davers Court, rated ‘Outstanding’ in all five areas by the Care Quality Commission, has been recognised for their person-centred care and commitment to going above and beyond for residents.

Judges noted that exceptional care is the norm at Davers Court, and highlighted the level of input residents have into how things operate at the home, from helping to recruit new team members, to choosing and adopting a dog. Team members empower residents to make these choices, and pre-admission assessments ensure care plans are created that enable residents to maintain their independence.

Dedicated to fulfilling lives, Davers Court has a lifestyle team focused on resident activities, which has seen the creation of a residents’ choir, in addition to visits from local schoolchildren and therapy animals prior to the pandemic. The benefits of this type of care on quality of life is astounding, as seen in one resident who was considered to be ‘end of life’ when she first moved in, and after being supported to eat well and gain strength, later celebrated her 99th and 100th birthday by flying in a glider plane.

Relatives of residents have also shared a number of comments about their experiences of the home, with one relative saying: “My Grandad has dementia and the team provide him with the respect and dignity he deserves. I believe he’s still alive due to the care he receives here.”

Sally Shadbolt, Home Manager at Davers Court, said: “We are thrilled to have been shortlisted in the ‘Best Individual Care Home or Care Community’ category at this years’ Care Home Awards.

“Being shortlisted is testament to the team’s hard work and innovative thinking to ensure every resident leads a happy and fulfilling life. The last year has certainly had its challenges, but the team has gone above and beyond to maintain as much normality as possible for residents, while keeping morale high with fun activities and events within the home.

“I’m incredibly proud of the Davers Court family, and everything they do to ensure it is a fantastic place to call home. I would like to say thank you to all of our team, as I know their work is greatly appreciated by myself, residents and their families. We’re all keeping our fingers crossed for a win later this year!”
