Residents at a care home in Thorrington have shared their heart-warming advice for new mums, with pearls of wisdom including getting all the sleep you can, and remembering to spoil your children - but not too much.
With age comes experience, and often some good advice too, which is why residents at Care UK’s Silversprings, on Tenpenny Hill, have decided to share their top tips for new mums ahead of Mother’s Day.
86-year-old Dot, mum of two, said remembering to teach your children good manners is key, while 94-year-old Josie, who has two children, stressed the importance of getting all the sleep you can.
Meanwhile, 86-year-old resident Jean, mother of two, advised new parents to spoil their children, but not too much, and 90-year-old Pam, who also has two children, simply said ‘Enjoy! This will be the best job you will ever have.’
Team members also shared their advice as part of the reminiscence session, with Home Manager, Joanne, saying ‘it’s ok to ask for help’ and Business Administrator, Nichola, reminding new parents ‘it’s ok to feel mum guilt’.
Joanne Rix, Home Manager at Silversprings, said: “Being a mum can be tough, and sometimes a bit of advice and reassurance from the older and wiser members of our community can go a long way.
“We have lots of very proud mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers and even great-great-grandmothers living here at Silversprings, who have plenty of tips to share from over the years.
“Writing our advice provided the perfect activity to reminisce on motherhood, which can be incredibly beneficial for older people, especially those living with dementia. Reflecting on strong memories from the past helps to boost confidence and offers the chance to re-live happy times, which can then prompt conversation. We learn a lot from the lifetime of experience from residents each day, which is why their advice is so special – and often very useful too!”
Silversprings is a modern care home which provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has a choice of lounges and dining rooms, along with facilities such as an activity room and hair salon.
