Bottoms up – can you beerlieve this Stroud care home has its own pub?

Home news

There is still one pub unaffected by current tier restrictions – and it’s in a Stroud care home.

The Scarlet Arms has opened its doors in Care UK’s Scarlet House care home, on Westward Road, and served its first drinks to residents.

Bottoms up – can you beerlieve this Stroud care home has its own pub?Current restrictions mean residents aren’t able to leave the home, so when they started missing their local, team members at Scarlet House got busy turning one of the home’s room into a special venue to bring the pub to them.

The home now hosts regular ‘pub nights’, where team members get their cocktail shakers out and put music or sport games on to recreate the real atmosphere of a pub. The home has also purchased drinks trolley to bring the party to residents unable to leave their rooms.

Joyce, a resident at Scarlet House, said: “It was great to be able to reminisce and catch up on old times going to our local pub with our favorite tipple.”

Dorothy Pye, Home Manager at Scarlet House, said: “We all miss going to the pub, and in these difficult times, there’s nothing like catching up with an old friend over a drink or two, so when residents told us they missed their local, we thought we’d bring it to them.

“For many residents, the pub is associated with a lot of positive memories from their younger years, from their first-ever drink to countless hearty meals with family or friends, and everything in between. The Scarlet Arms’ opening was a huge success and residents left with a smile on their face.

“Ironically, it turns out we’re the only pub in the UK to be unaffected by the tier restrictions, so we’re looking forward to our next pub night!”

Scarlet House is a state-of-the-art care home and provides full-time residential, nursing, dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. The care home, which features 86 ensuite bedrooms, has been designed to enable its residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence.
