‘A big dose of positivity’ – Harrow care home hero crowned

A care home in Harrow has praised a team member for her dedication, hard work and passion throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Chidiuto Imediegwu, lifestyle lead at Care UK’s Buchanan Court, on Sudbury Hill, has been named a ‘Care UK Hero’ for going above and beyond for colleagues and residents in recent months.

The nomination was shared as part of a nationwide search for Care UK Heroes throughout its 122 care homes. From outstanding colleagues, to residents who have ensured morale remains high, this competition aims to shine a light on these exceptional people.

Throughout the pandemic, Chidiuto has gone above and beyond to maintain contact between residents and families, creating an individualised video-call timetable for each resident and posting regular updates on the home’s Facebook page for their loved ones. Following the government’s social distancing guidelines, she ensured residents could continue to enjoy one-on-one activities, and set up a regular exercise group, with residents invited to join in along the corridor.

Chidiuto said: “It’s an honour to be recognised as a Care UK Hero. Being able to put a smile on residents’ faces, whether that be by organising corridor exercise classes or Zoom calls with their families is incredibly rewarding, and the past few months have reinforced just how important the service we provide is for residents and their families. I couldn’t be prouder to be part of the Buchanan Court team.”

Simon Doherty, home manager at Buchanan Court, added: “The past few months have been challenging for the whole team, but Chidiuto’s ability to adapt has been nothing short of extraordinary – and she did so with a constant smile on her face.

“We’ve been blown away by her passion and creativity, putting the residents’ needs first by coming up with interesting, fulfilling activities throughout lockdown while making sure they stayed in touch with their loved ones. Day after day, she brought a big dose of positivity to the home, and we feel incredibly lucky to have her in our team.

“From our nurses and lifestyle coordinators, to our housekeepers and chefs, everyone has done a tremendous job over the past few months, and I cannot thank Chidiuto and the rest of the team enough for their hard work and for continuing to make Buchanan Court a wonderful place to live.”

Buchanan Court has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and specialist dementia care, as well as short-term respite.
