Crowborough care home residents set their eyes on the skies

Crowborough care home residents set their eyes on the skiesResidents at a care home in Crowborough celebrated Britain’s best birds as part of the world’s largest garden wildlife survey – and it was a flying success!

This year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch saw residents at Care UK’s Heather View, on Beacon Road, celebrating the best of British birds with some exciting avian-themed activities.

As part of the celebrations, residents were joined by pupils from St John’s Primary School for a special talk from Alan Loweth, an RSPB expert, who shared his top tips to recognise the sounds of common garden birds and birds of prey, which are local to the area.

Pupils and residents also teamed up to make brightly coloured bird feeders to attract more species to the home’s garden.

Natasha King, home manager at Heather View, said: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities here at Heather View, and we had a lot of fun celebrating this year’s bird-themed event.

“It was a pleasure to welcome pupils from St John’s Primary School to the home – they really helped to take our event to new heights, and it was fantastic to see them form new friendships with the residents.

“Connecting with nature is extremely beneficial for older people, especially those living with dementia, as it promotes positive social interaction, improves wellbeing and provides an opportunity for sensory stimulation, which can conjure happy memories and the associated emotions.

“I’d like to say thank you to Alan for joining us and making the day informative and fun – we’ve certainly learnt a lot about the species of birds that live in our garden.”
