Cheadle care home residents and local school take birdwatch weekend to the ‘nest level’

Cheadle care home residents and local school take birdwatch weekend to the ‘nest level’Residents at a care home in Cheadle celebrated Britain’s best birds as part of the world’s largest garden wildlife survey – and it was a flying success!

This year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch saw residents at Care UK’s Abney Court, in Abney Hall Park, celebrate the best of British birds with some exciting avian-themed activities.

As part of the celebrations, residents were joined by pupils from Laurus Academy for a fun game of bird bingo and birdwatching in the home’s garden. Residents were also treated to a special visit from Lower Moss Wood Education Reserve and Wildlife Hospital who brought birds of prey, including a barn owl.

Everyone enjoyed seeing the impressive creatures up close and learning more about the birds in an interesting ‘show and tell’ session.

Helen Parry, home manager at Abney Court, said: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities here at Abney Court, and we had a lot of fun celebrating this year’s bird-themed event. It was great to play bird bingo with the children from Laurus Academy – and being able to see the birds of prey up close was a real treat for everyone.

“Connecting with nature can be extremely important for older people, and promotes positive social interaction, improves wellbeing and provides an opportunity for sensory stimulation. This can be also be incredibly beneficial for those living with dementia, as it can conjure happy memories and the associated emotions.

“I’d like to say thank you to Laurus Academy for joining us and making the day so special.”

The home provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care.
