Women’s Institute member names new Quorn care home

A local organisation has won a competition to help name a brand new care home in Quorn.

Members of the Quorn Women’s Institute took part in the competition to name the new Care UK home which will open in October.

The competition called for the people who know the town best, its residents, to share suggestions that has a cultural or regional reference to the town.

Kate Hutchinson, a member of the Quorn Women’s Institute inspired the winning name, ‘Lonsdale Mews’, on Farley Way, named after the 5^th Earl of Lonsdale, Hugh Cecil Lowther, who was the Master of the Quorn Hunt in the 1800s, and lived at Soar House in Quorn for five years. Today, he is most remembered for the ‘Lonsdale Belt’, named after him, which is still awarded to British boxing champions today.

Dianna Coy, regional director at Care UK, said: “The home naming process is one of the key milestones for a new home, so it was important to involve the community in the decision. All of the names put forward were of a very high quality, but we felt ‘Lonsdale Mews’ really rooted the home in the local area.

“We’re so grateful to everyone that made a name suggestion, and to the Quorn Women’s Institute for helping select the home’s name – we hope to work with them again in the future!”

Lonsdale Mews incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities, and includes its own cinema, hairdressing salon and café. The layout of the building is configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities.
